The oblique view of extruded spikes, lays out a city as elaborate as that of a Persian carpet. It’s how an X-ray looks, crystal clear and transparent. It is how we imagine the military sees the monochromatic world when surveilling it at night. It is as if the digital board of the processor has been blown out of proportion, the higher you go the more prestige you gain, obstructing each other’s view. Yet gazing out of the window of the 150th floor remains the most intense and solitude act so far that this century of buildings has offered.

Tall buildings will use “smart skins” that will respond to changes, environmental and emotional. Smarter programmable elevators will distribute traffic more efficiently vertically and travellators will do the same horizontally, between the lobbies of clustered skyscrapers.

Skyscrapers are always contemporary. To recognize them is to accept the metropolitan condition as a dialectical element and at the same time to embrace the most advanced global capital – that of consumerism expressed as “gigantic machines” and a “cathedrals of commerce”.

In Dubai there is little difference between holiday accommodation and housing. Architectural programs are becoming fused and undifferentiated. The morphology of the landscape and sea-scape is becoming fabricated to the point that it may soon be difficult to differentiate between the natural and the constructed.
