The Dubai Experiment
“A surreal machine that reproduces its own identity, Dubai is the most successful urban model in the region. There is no new theory here, rather a realization of commonplace potentials and well-rehearsed attitudes toward the city, which is seen as the sum of events and urban activities that work well at all levels. More than a grand-scale “shopping mall,” Dubai is a city of corporate-culture landmarks, a hypermarket or concourse-like space where events and plug-in enterprises change and expand, become deformed and replaced. It is comprised of a series of thematic zones, “hyper-surface” planes, “liquid space” events, and “mind-zone” spaces. It is a city of airport- and hotel lobby-like spaces, a modern urban mirage in the desert.”
