Lecture: "Homecoming"
Homecoming
September 2005: “Homecoming”, a lecture by George Katodrytis during “Explorations in House Design”, AUS exhibition at the Qanat Al Qasba Gallery, Sharjah, UAE.
The lecture started with stills from Godard’s 1963 film Les Mepris (Contempt), a study of complex human relationships set against the formal and geometric Villa Malaparte, in Capri. The film portrayed the hero as Homer’s Ulysses and his journey home.
“Wandering” as a journey of narration and exploration, was then related to the design of the Virus House (STUDIONOVA ARCHITECTS / GEORGE KATODRYTIS), as terminal space in the city. The house was designed as a diagram for living, using the fold as a generator of form, geometry and structure. The resultant geometry was cast in concrete. Refusing any reference to idealism, nostalgia and sentimentalism the project is addressing contemporary methodologies of experimentation, morphogenesis and topology.
