URBAN BLOCKS
Urban Blocks: The skyscraper and the Metropolis
Frank Lloyd Wright’s mile-high skyscraper had an internal logic. Condensing itself an entire city, it was coherently placed in the ideal prairie of Usonia. The skyscraper is an iconic representation of the prosperity of a metropolis. It is a by-product of the urban condition: “gigantic anti-urban machine.” Downtown buildings do not need each other. They form a cluster of autonomies. There is no context to respond and no relationships to keep. It is not about keeping in with any identity, but about inventing a new language.
