Invited member of the Judging Panel for The Middle East Lighting Design Awards (MELDA)
George has been invited as a member of the judging panel for the 2008 Middle East Lighting Design Awards (MELDA), Dubai.
The Middle East Lighting Design Awards (MELDA) will honor the outstanding and innovative lighting design taking place across the Middle East. It is a unique opportunity for the region to recognize and celebrate the creativity and technical skill of the world’s leading lighting designers in enhancing the region’s built environment through the power of light. Cutting-edge, dynamic and ground-breaking projects are being built in this fast-paced and exciting environment, the night-time image of these buildings as enhanced by lighting is of huge importance. MELDA is fully supported by the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), and (LUCI) Lighting Urban Community International.
The awards stand for quality and distinction in the Middle East and will create a benchmark of excellence which will be instantly recognizable and will generate valuable publicity and marketing.
Judged by an independent and broad-based panel, winners of MELDA will be presented at an extravagant Gala dinner held on the 27th April 2008, attended by the world’s leading lighting designers, and senior professionals involved in the delivery of the region’s major projects.
The awards this year will contain ten categories including the prestigious ‘Middle East Lighting Project of the Year’.
The projects must be within the Middle East Region, including the GCC, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Iran and Egypt.
1. Public Buildings – to include historic buildings, museums, galleries, airports, places of worship and government buildings.
2. Exterior – to include building facades, bridges, structures, public spaces, landscaped areas and street lighting.
3. Hospitality & Leisure – to include hotels, entertainment centres, theatres, cinemas and sports venues.
4. Retail – to include shopping malls, department stores, boutiques, and showrooms.
5. Restaurants & Bars – to include restaurants, bars and coffee shops.
6. Temporary Installations – to include temporary and one-off lighting installations, exhibitions, lighting for concerts and corporate events.
Product Innovation Categories – these awards are for new products launched January 07-08, which the jury deems to be truly innovative. Product innovations must have been commercially available during the entry period, prototypes will not be considered.
7. Luminaires – Internal and External.
8. Supporting Lighting Technologies.
9. Environmental – this product must show how it balances environmental and economic issues in the design and development.
10. The Middle East Lighting Project of the Year
This will be a project that, in the judges’ opinion, will have exhibited exceptional lighting design skills, innovation and vision. There will be no direct submission for this category, candidates will be short listed from projects submitted in the previous categories.
